How home charging affects your electric car running costs

Why home charging matters so much for your running costs

  • Use your EV's built-in scheduling feature or a smart charger app to set a charging window that aligns with off-peak hours.
  • If you have solar panels, talk to your installer or retailer about a plan that lets you maximise self-consumption during the day and off-peak charging at night.
  • Monitor your electricity bills for the first couple of months after switching to make sure the new plan is delivering savings.

The role of solar panels and battery storage

For Australian homeowners with rooftop solar, the maths gets even more interesting. If you can charge your EV during the day while solar panels are generating power, you are effectively using near-free electricity rather than exporting it to the grid for a modest feed-in tariff. Home battery storage takes this a step further, letting you store solar energy during the day and use it to charge your car overnight. The upfront cost of a home battery system is still significant, but for high-mileage drivers the payback period is shortening as battery prices continue to fall.

Things to watch out for

Home charging is not without its considerations. A few things worth keeping in mind before you assume the cheapest possible rate is always achievable.

  • Demand tariffs can catch EV owners off guard. If your plan charges based on peak demand, adding a 7 kW home charger to your evening routine could push up your bill unexpectedly.
  • Older homes may need a switchboard upgrade before a Level 2 charger can be safely installed, adding to the upfront cost.
  • Renters face real barriers since installing a home charger depends on landlord approval and is not always possible.
  • If you live in an apartment, body corporate rules and shared electrical infrastructure can complicate home charging significantly.
